Mint Hill is a small town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the eastern edge of the Asheville-Chapel Hill metropolitan area. It lies east of Interstate 5 and south of Interstate 840. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. Mint Hill is part of Buncombe County. The name "Mint Hill" comes from English settlers who found sugarcane growing there in 1693 and named the location for their new discovery, "Hillsborough." In 1702, colonists built a trading post here and began to mint coins called "Buncombe County Notes." In 1800, they erected a courthouse here and changed the name to "Mint Hill". The town's first school was built in 1819. In 1907, MintHill became home to one of America's first airmail facilities when it opened at UNC Asheville's Airport. AirMail operated out of this building until it closed in 1969 service due to budget cuts by then-Gov.-elect James Buchanan III effective that year; however mail continued to be delivered via horse and buggy until 1976 when a new facility was established adjacent to Chapel Hills High School which continues today as United States Postal Service's main delivery point for Buncombe County residents (and other parts of North Carolina). In 1979, Hwy 369 (now I-5) was rerouted through MintHill making it an important transportation hub for both residential areas just north (the University Area)of I-5 past US 1& Weldon Rd., as well as businesses near US 29/I-85 further west .
