Mebane is located on the border of Henderson and McDowell Counties and is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Mebane was founded in 1836 by Captain John Mebane as a trading post on the Great Smoky Mountains National Park road known as "The Valley Road." In 1840, Colonel James A. McDowell donated land to make Mebane a town and it became one of the most populous towns in Henderson County. Grant who decided that Bragg should be executed instead of being allowed to return home to face trial for treason because he had failed to fight against the Union army under Lincoln's command. After learning about this decision from Grant, Confederate President Jefferson Davis ordered Majestic Theater owner David Ferris to fire all showings ofplays with Confederate content starting on April 12th so that public opinion would shift away from supporting McClellan's army while they still could before it was too late.
