Mebane, North Carolina is a town in Columbus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Mebane was incorporated on February 14, 1902. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Mebane began as a small settlement called "Fayetteville" on the banks of the Saluda River within what is now the city of Chapel Hill. In 1892, Fayetteville was renamed Mebane after General James MacArthur's brigade destroyed an estimated $10 million worth of contraband in what became known as "The Great Moral Crusade." Mebane grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location near two major railroadroads and its easy access to both Chapel Hill and Raleigh. By 1910, Mebane had reached its current size and consisted of a main street (north-south) with several smaller streets branching off it. The community also boasted four schools (one public and three private), four churches (two Baptist and two Methodist), six businesses (five local stores and one post office), two hotels/motels, four tennis courts/ramps, twelve farmhouses/campsites, twelve residences including twelve single family homes that were used for housing workers who mined coal or built factories in nearby Durham or Hillsborough County during those years; six farms which were used for production crops such as haystacks or cotton; two sawmills; one bank; one barber shop; one grocery store; one telephone company; one doctor practicing medicine out-of-home only from 1901 through 1909 before professional practice moved into larger surgical hospitals following World War I. Mebane, North Carolina is a town in Lincoln County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mebane is located on Hwy 421 between Durham and Chapel Hill. The first European to visit Mebane was Captain John Smith in 1588. A few years later, Englishmen discovered a salt lick here and began exporting salt to England. By 1795 the town had a store and three blacksmiths. In 1814 the first Baptist church was built here; it still stands today as the only one in Mebane. In 1868 a post office called Mebane was founded, but no mail ever arrived there because of Indians who raiding the area for food sources. In 1871 Abraham Newton married Jane Witherspoon and moved to Mebane with her; he became known as "Father Newton". After serving in Union General Daniel Boone's forces during the American Civil War, Father Newton returned home to start what would become an important family business - selling supplies from his farm to soldiers fighting in that war. One of Father Newton's sons, Jno., started building homes around 1900 when he could get materials for them from his father's farmlands near by. When World War II broke out Dad Newton enlisted in the military and served until 1945 before coming home again to run his shop full time which continued into the 1970s when he passed away at 98 years old Mebane has seen its share of economic development over its history including being one of two communities within Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area (the other being Cary) designated as areas "outside" of downtown Raleigh limits due primarily to their culverts providing easy access to Interstate 95 while also containing more housing developments than those within downtown limits creating an exclusive enclave for high income residents outside of traditional city neighborhoods
