In 1923, the first electric line was extended to Mebane and in 1930, gas lines were installed. By 1940, Mebane had over 100 businesses and 3 banks. The post office closed in 1951 but the community continued to grow until it reached its current size of 7,000 people in 2000. Today, Mebane is home to many businesses including six hospitals (one for pediatric care), two high schools (Milton Academy and Gastonia Valley), one professional soccer team (the Granville County Fury FC), one shopping mall (The Mall of NC), three churches (Anglican/ Methodist/ Presbyterian) and four schools: Bryson High School; Davidson HS; Greenleaf Middle School; and New Hope HS. As a result of its growth potential and strong economy, Mebane has become known as an important center for education within the Granville County area. In 2006-2007 alone, Mebane ranked second among all towns in North Carolina for economic development impact according to Clarion Ledger reports – after Chapel Hill! Additionally, several new private businesses have moved into town since 2007 due to its expanding job market - some totaling over 1 million dollars per year!

It is the third most populous municipality in Mecklenburg County and the ninth most populous municipality in all of North Carolina. Mebane is located on the Yadkin River and is part of Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. It is also home to UNC Greensboro and its flagship campus, Duke University/NC State University Joint Research Center (JRCC), one of two campuses operated by Duke University with research programs outside Durham, and Mebane High School which has been named "One of America's Top 100 Schools" by Newsweek magazine three times consecutively since 1998. Mebane was founded in 1892 as a farming community about northwest of Raleigh on land donated by General James Ewing Waddrell along the Yadkin River. A post office called Mebane was established in 1895, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1933. In 1903, General Baptiste Lacroix opened a general store here that became known as "The Lacroix Store." In 1915, local farmers formed what became known as the Old Mill Committee to improve water transportation for their crops by constructing a dam across the Yadkin River from present-day Mebane to increase water availability for agriculture below Durham and other towns upstream. The mill complex still stands today near junction of US 301/441 N (now I-240) and NC helicopter route 26 just east of town limits; it includes an agricultural museum open to visitors every day except Mondays from 9am to 3pm when it is closed for lunch due to restrictions placed upon it by law enforcement officials during peak tourist season). Mebane had its first fire department organized on July 1, 1907 when six men from neighboring Cary were hired to provide insurance for citizens living in or within five miles of Mebane who did not have their own fire department protection system at that time.
