Today, MebANE remains a diverse community with many cultures represented: African American (14% of population), Asian American (3%), Hispanic (10%), Caucasian (2%), Italian (1%) and German (1%). Mebane, North Carolina is a town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2000 census. Mebane is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. It is home to UNC Greensboro and the Mebane Research Center for Atmospheric Sciences. Mebane was platted in 1872 by Colonel William Meade on Sale Creek east of present-day Chapel Hill. The name means "place where two mills stand." A post office was established at Mebane in 1879, and remained in operation until 1911. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell's brigade attacked Union forces under US Brigadier General Jubal Early nearpresent-day Chapel Hill; Ewell's brigade lost 5 killed and 31 wounded while Early's brigade lost three killed and 12 wounded. The attack became known as the Battle of Mebane due to its similarities with that fought nearby at Second Manassas Junction on July 17 that year by Confederate Lieutenant General James Longstreet's division under Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest. The community grew rapidly after it was platted and soon had a store, schoolhouse, Masonic lodge (which still exists), churches (twoMethodist, one Baptist), post office (1879), telephone exchange (1911), cotton gin (1873), sawmill(1895) and several residences.(1912 Marilla Snead House). A new courthouse replaced the old court house which burned down in 1912; this building served as both the town hall from 1911 to 1913 and also as an jail from 1915 to 1917 when it was converted into a fire station. In 1903 the first bank opened in North Carolina with $10 000 capitalization—the First National Bank of Mebane today remains one of America’s largest private banks with over $200 million assets under management across nine states including North Carolina! The first public school opened in 1896 which closed in 1902 but reopened again briefly before being discontinued again due to lack of money until 1924 when it reopened as Academy School No 2 (). In 1925 Academy School No 2 merged with First Presbyterian Church which had been built earlier that year on land leased from John Gorman who donated his property alongwith other land for what would become Mebane Village development opposite First Presbyterian Church.(First Presbyterian Church now anchors most downtown development). A new Methodist church also opened during this time called New Hope Episcopal Church which has since been destroyed by fire but rebuilt multiple timesenged numerous times since then inside or outside of Freedom Methodist Church next door.) From 1930 through 2003 much activity took place within walking distance known locally as “The Triangle” comprising Chapel Hill Street Extension between Main Street/Mallory Avenue northward bisecting University Boulevard between Lenoir Road eastward terminus., extending southwesterly on University Boulevard past intersection with I-75 just beyond Mallory Avenue corneringUniversity Boulevard.) Mebane was a small plantation in the eastern part of Carolina, located on the borders of Johnston County and Henderson County. The land was acquired by Colonel Nathaniel Meek from the Cherokees in 1792. The Meek family held the plantation until 1848 when it passed to John H. Hardin. In 1886, it became part of the United States Department of Agriculture's experimental station at Morristown. It was sold to Ewing Coffee Company in 1912 and finally conveyed to Mebane Methodist Episcopal Church in 1916.
