Mebane is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1871 by John Meek and named for him. The population was 9,675 at the 2010 census. Mebane is one of the most diverse towns in Gaston County with a wide variety of cultures and ancestries present. Mebane's history can be traced back to 1871 when John Meek founded the town on land he acquired from the Chickasaw Nation. The name derived from an Indian word meaning "place where deer run." Meek called his new town after himself because he had been born near what is now Mebane. The first stores opened in Mebane in 1875, and by 1880 there were fifteen businesses open in the small town. By 1890, Mebane had become a center for agriculture and industry with a bakery, livery stable, grocery store, five-and-sixteenths brewery and two tanneries among its businesses. In 1903, Mebane became part of Gaston County when it was formed from portions of Tyrrell and Union Counties. During World War II, much activity took place within Mebane thanks to its location as the epicenter of munitions production in southeastern Gaston County. More than sixty companies located their plants here including Bethlehem Steel Company (now Arkeensteel), Winchester Repeating Arms Company (now Remington arms), PPG plc., General Electric Company (GEICO) and many others during World War II. Manufacturing stopped abruptly following Pearl Harbor but restarted soon afterwards due to wartime needs such as airplane parts and shipbuilding materials not covered by GI Bill restrictions which would eventually lead to mass layoffs following the Korean War. In 1951-1953 there were three general elections held in Gaston County resulting in four members being elected to county government: Sheriff William Ladd; Treasurer Gurney Hoke; Commissioner Charles Aversa Jr.; all of whom served until May 3rd 1957 when commissioners Fenton Carney Jr., Harry Crouch Sr., James McGee resigned effective July 1st due to term limits set forth by then Governor Jeptha Stephens who also appointed Commissioners Lewis Birdwell Jr., Wanda Henderson Sims etcetera making six commissioners instead of three as originally envisioned under state law.....

In 1849, Mebane became one of six towns in centralNorth Carolina chosen to become part of what would become Winston-Salem County; it remained an unincorporated community until 1959. In 1865, Mebane's cotton gin was destroyed by Confederate forces during fighting around Fort Fisher; however, it reopened two years later with new equipment thanks to donations from local businesspeople including prominent textile manufacturer Atherton Hoggard Sr.. This helped lead to increased cotton production in Mebane over time – which helped make it one of the most prosperous communities in northcentral North Carolina for many decades until suburbanization began reducing its purchasing power beginning in the early 21st century.
