Mebane, North Carolina is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. It is the seat of Durham County and has a population of 31,479 as of 2019. Mebane was founded in 1892 by white men from South Carolina who moved to the area after the American Civil War. The first post office was established in Mebane on December 5, 1892. The town annexed parts of Durham County in 1907 and 1916. Since then it has grown rapidly with its annexation becoming one of the most recent examples of rural growth in North Carolina. The current population is over 40% black and 60% white which gives it a unique racial profile within the state. Mebane was once known for its cornmeal bread which became famous throughout eastern North Carolina due to its consistency and flavor. Today, there are several restaurants that serve up traditional southern cuisine such as chicken-and-waffles at Mahogany Hill Cafe & Bakery, macaroni and cheese at Mrs Fitzjohn's Diner, biscuits and gravy at Baptist General Store #1 across from Pigeon Forge Golf Course, sweet potato pies at Coal Mine Cafe -all owned by same family-,"Crazy Legs" (a local variety show) at Wacoal's Pizza Place; "The Bobcats" (a professional wrestling team) playing their home games out Uptown Ballpark; And "Gone With The Wind" being filmed here between 1951-1957 on location near Mebane High School before moving to Raleigh proper for those years Today many businesses have closed but what remains makes Mebane an interesting place to visit regardless if you're looking for traditional southern food or entertainment options like professional wrestling matches or Gone With The Wind screenings

There were only 10 residents when the town was founded but it grew quickly because of its location and access to resources such as timber and slaves. In 1865, Mebane became part of Vance County which made it one of the counties that formed Davidson County during Reconstruction. African Americans were allowed to vote in Mebane through local government until 1913 when they were banned from voting altogether within Vance County due to state laws passed during that time period which discriminated against black people. During World War II, many businesses closed their doors because there wasn’t enough demand for goods produced by slave labor because of wartime production quotas set by President Franklin D Roosevelt in order to get America into the war on a good faith basis without admitting any guilt for involvement in Nazi Germany. However, some businesses reopened after Councilman Leroy Thomas organized a boycott of Duke Energy products beginning February 15th 1944 until May 7th 1944 due to high prices charged for nuclear fuel at local stores caused by wartime shortages caused by military production quotas set by FDR
Mebane is a town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Mebane was Robert Epps in 1853.
