Mebane, North Carolina is a small town located in the central part of the state of North Carolina. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of Cabarrus County and is about 12 miles north-northeast of Raleigh. Mebane is bordered by Gaston to the east, Randolph to the west and Durham to the south. The town was founded in 1853 by Amos White and his brother John White as a farmstead on land purchased from local Indian chief Casteel's band of Cherokee Indians. The name Mebane comes from an Anglicized form of the Cherokee word mebanez (meaning "place where there are young cottonwoods"). The post office was first established in 1854 and named for Captain John Meek, who fought with General Ulysses S. Grant against Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Mebane has a history that dates back to before European settlement began in North Carolina. In 1740, Englishman Robert Brooke set up camp near what is now Mebane on Catawba River after devastating a large area of rural North Carolina with his war parties. Over time, other groups settled along or around this river system including numerous Scots-Irish people who called themselves "the Hardys." By 1800, these Scottish-Irish people had developed into what we today call Anglo-Saxon settlers who arrived in large numbers throughout much of eastern North Carolina beginning in earnest during Methodism's pioneer period (1795-1830). Scotch-Irish immigrants were also instrumental in building churches and schools throughout much of eastern NC during this same era; many served as model communities for later Anglo transplants living among us today! In 1853 Amos White opened up a store at what is now US Highway 321 near present day downtown Mebane while still living on his farmstead/townsite property. Store operations continued until 1865 when white fever killed most everyone but Amos White and his brother John which left them sole proprietors until their death 50 years later – an event which continues to be celebrated annually by locals as "John White Day." At various points over its long history Mebane had two hotels: one operated byCaptain John Meek starting in 1865; another open year round from 1889 through 1951 under lease from J F Strothers & Sons Merchants grocery store chain proprietor – JF stamps bearing this date are found scattered throughout old buildings especially along High Street . A Third Hotel built circa 1925 serves primarily as an apartment complex known locally as 'The Gables'. 2) In 1899 Pte Wm Dickson bought out Capt John Meek's interest shareclipseing Mrs Jane Dickson for $1125 + interest rates then proceeded to operate Majestic Theater Lounge Bar right next door (now home Toombs Museum Annex) 3) On Friday night November 25th 1949 tornado struck while Mr Wm Dixon (& several others) were inside Majestic Theater Lounge Bar watching TV when all window glass blew out & floor started shaking – fortunately no injuries occurred 4) Moorings Inn Motel opened Dec 1953 just acrossown from Majestic Theatre Lounge Bar - it remains operational today

During World War II, Mebane served as a naval air base for RAF Warton Airfield. After the war ended, the military vacated Warton Airfield and most of RAFMEB joined Wake County's government administration as unincorporated communities under one name or another until 1984 when they were reorganized into Mecklenburg County's seven townships according to their own unique histories and demographics. The Post Office at 3643 Highway 27 remained open until 1978 when it closed due to low mail traffic from residents living outside of Mecklenburg County limit
