Mebane is located on the banks of the Yadkin River about 26 miles (41 km) north-northwest of Raleigh and 13 miles (19 km) east of Chapel Hill. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,836 people, 710 households, and 584 families residing in the town. The population density was 611.3 people per square mile (239.4/km²). There were 839 housing units at an average density of 258.8 per square mile (1010/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White, 0% African American, 0% Native American, 0% Asian Pacific Islander, 2% from other races, and 1% from two or more races
Mebane grew up in the early 1800s as a small town on the edge of a manufacturing and agricultural region. The area was first settled by Cherokees, and later became part of the United States. In 1861, Confederate forces besieged Mebane during the American Civil War, and while Union forces eventually arrived to help evacuate the town, over 100 residents were killed or raped. After the war ended, Mebane slowly regained its prosperity until World War II caused significant damage to the community. In 1951, Mebane was designated as a city by North Carolina governor J.B. Pritchett.
