In 1965, when Hand county was split into two parts due to secessionism between North Carolina and South Carolina, Matthews experienced its own civil war with violence taking place between Confederate sympathizers and Unionists throughout much of 1966 until federal troops arrived to quell it following orders from President Lyndon Johnson who felt then-North Carolina Governor Holden Campbell had failed to take appropriate action against pro-Confederate sentiment within the state's borders during his term as governor (the so-called "New Durham Massacre"). During this time period many businesses were destroyed or looted leaving behind a significant economic impact on the community - including local restaurant chains such as Sonic Drive-In which remain open today thanks largely to their location within walking distance of both high schools). These men not only contributed materially to Matthews' growth but also helped contribute significantly to North Carolina's political landscape during this time period. Matthews has experienced some landmark moments throughout its history including being chosen as host city for the 1984 Summer Olympics; hosting the 2002 FIFA World Cup; being selected as one of the "10 Best Places To Live InAmerica" by Forbes magazine; and now serving as home to both UNC-Chapel Hill (the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and Duke University (North Carolina's flagship university). In addition to these professional accomplishments, Matthews is also well-known for its annual Bluegrass Festival which attracts more than 150,000 visitors each year.
