The town was founded in 1820 as a sawmill town on the Yadkin River by Scotsman Alexander Matthews and his wife Catherine. Matthews named it for himself and his wife's paternal ancestor, John Matthews who had settled in what is now eastern Randolph County in 1785. Matthews was one of four men who founded Raleigh in 1824 when he moved from Scotland with his family to become its first mayor. He became America's first governor when John C soften succeeded him in 1829. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House near here after a three-month battle that ended with over 50,000 casualties on both sides. North Carolina declared itself within the Union after this event but continued to maintain links with Confederate States of America (CSA). The town declined during Reconstruction because most manufacturing went out of business due to lack of resources and competition from northern cities such as Raleigh and Durham. However, Matthews' marketing skills helped turn around things again by creating a tourist industry based on visiting the local plantations and historical sites nearby such as Fort Tryon and Chapel Hill. This led to growth until World War II when all manufacturing ceased except for a few light industrial plants which were gradually closed down over time due to pollution problems caused by those plants. In recent years, there has been some redevelopment including construction of several new homespun stores along Main Street followed by plans for an arena/park which would house a high school football team as well as other sporting events
