Matthews, N.C., is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,917 at the 2000 census. The Matthews post office was established in 1856, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1992. Matthews is home to Brierfield Elementary School and the McDowell County Courthouse which are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town of Matthews was originally named for General James B. Matthews who served as an officer with Confederate forces during the American Civil War. On November 3, 1861, General James B. Matthews and his brigade under Lieutenant Colonel John Waddell attacked a Union army column near what is now known as White Sands Gap on the edge of McDowell County. The Union attack failed and General Matthews' brigade retreated without loss while Waddell's unit went through severe damage (the first time Union troops had ever invaded McDowell County). After this event, General Matthews became known as "The general who lost." In 1876, two men named Prentice and Hargrave purchased land east of present-day downtown Matthews from Andrew Jackson Smith for $1 per acre (though they may not have actually owned any land at that point). They began developing what would become Brierfield Township into a rural community with churches, schools and plantations lying between them along Withlacoochee Creek Railroad. In 1881 Prentice married Anna Crouse Neuman who moved to Durham to live with her husband but she retained ownership of most of their properties including those bordering present-day downtown Matthews which she donated to the town for use as its common property. In 1886 when construction began on what would become Baptist Church located near center square downtown Matthews all property within one mile radius was put up for sale excepting about 7 acres that Mrs. Neuman gifted to the town for its municipal building purposes only; this included much later additions such as upper level parking garage/town hall addition completed in 2007 adjacent to current courthouse plaza). By 1898 over 21 streets were laid out within city limits by citizens working together led by First Selectman Edwin Sayers (who also served as mayor from 1951-1957) resulting in today's photographically rich skyline visible across downtown from original square located just northeast of high school
