Matthews was a major player in both the American Revolution and the Civil War. He served as colonel of Confederate forces during the war and he later became governor of South Carolina after its secession from America. After Reconstruction ended Reconstructionism throughout much of America following World War I, he returned to North Carolina where he resumed his political career with success. He also developed an agricultural empire that extended beyond North Carolina into Virginia and Kentucky during this time period as well as other parts of America.
