In 1957-58, Matthews hosted the first annual Appalachian Festival which featured music from all over eastern North Carolina. A local landmark that still stands today is Mount Carmel Baptist Church which was built in 1918 and serves as a central stop for tourists visiting Matthews. The church has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978
