The name Matthews was chosen because it was heard as a call from the inhabitants of neighboring communities such as Wynneburg (now Winston-Salem), Mount Olivette (now Monroe), Ahoskie Falls (now Gastonia), Rocky Mount (now Rockingham), Berea (now Elizabethtown), Marlboro Village (now Smyrna), Chapel Hill (now Chatham) – all located within less than one mile of where the present town stands – asking for help in finding a place to live. In 1868, Matthews became an independent city under the name “Matthewsville” when it annexed portions of Person County east of Danville Road including Allendale Plantation which had been abandoned by its previous owners due to competition from nearby towns such asayetteville and Morganton. The discovery in 1886 by JV Doleman Jr., president and founder of Southern Tobacco Company datalogging his family plantation near Asheboro led to increased tobacco production in northeast Johnston County so much so that Doleman decided to make his home there permanently; he renamed his new plantation Asheboro Plantation after Johnsons old seat at Nags Head on Currituck Island during what would be known as “Dolemania” period between 1886-1894 when land titles were recorded with three initial letters: A for Ashley or Johnston County B for Buncombe or Vance County C for Person or Dobson County In 1916 when Person Countys first post office opened under then Mayor John Sargeant with James Fenton acting as postmaster general Asheboro became Durham Post Office(1916-1967). From 1915 until 1967 Asheboro had 2 banks one being Peoples State Bank which closed 1951 & First National Bank 1912 thru 1917 both are now closed buildings still standing on Main Street just south side Of High Street long time ago
