Matthews, North Carolina is a town located in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnston County and home to the Matthews Museum of Art. The town was founded by General James Matthews on November 5, 1814 as a result of the Treaty of Hanging Rock between Cherokee and white settlers. The town named after General Matthews's father-in-law Jefferson Davis. Matthews played an important role in the American Revolution as a general and cavalry officer. In 1781 he was sent with forces against Tories in western North Carolina while his men were under Colonel John Sevier's command. He took part in several engagements during the war and killed many Tories. After the end of hostilities he returned to Matthews Cove where he built himself a house and died October 8, 1782 at age 58 years old. After Matthews' death his son John married Elizabeth Partridge who also became known as "Eleanor" because she had married Sir Edmund Burke, 1st Baronet (1746-1827). They had six children: Giles (1783-1855), Thomas Conway (1785-1866), James Edward Conway (1800-1865), Eleanor Burke Partridge (1802-1876), Fanny Hewitt Conway (1804-1930) andheneira Elizabeth Burke Partridge (27 September 1807 – 10 May 1893). A post office called Matthews was established in 1824, but it was discontinued in 1831 due to financial problems caused by inflationary factors. A new post office called Morristown was established on July 15, 1830, but it too failed to take hold due to lack thereof mail service from Matthews until 1835 when a road connecting Morristown with nearby Wilmington arrived which made transportation easier for residents living near each other possible In 1840 Delaware State Road No 2 routed through Matthews bypassing downtown making it much more accessible to visitors In 1861 Lieutenant Governor David Hunter appointed Professor Elijah Hickson director of public works for Johnston County; this appointment resulted in increased development around Matthews including new housing projects that began popping up along what is now US 421 which became known as Hickson Drive today . By 1865 Jane Addams had started her Hull House Settlement project adjacent to what is now US 421 which led to increased development around her property leading eventually to her name being attached thereto
