In 1865, Confederate General John Buford called upon Union forces during the American Civil War to attack Andersonville Prison near Matthews where more than 1,500 men were held captive including future President Ulysses S Grant and General Robert E Lee Aftermath of the war saw increased demand for food so much so that early markets began functioning outside of town limits due to lack of space within buildings erected following hostilities. This event is also commonly referred to as “The Day Of The Bridges” because it was one of the most significant attacks against Union forces during the Civil War
Matthews was founded by white settlers in 1795. The town was named for George Matthews, a Revolutionary War officer and member of the North Carolina General Assembly. By 1800, Matthews had a population of about 100 people. In 1810, the town became part of Henderson County. In 1825, Matthews was renamed to Matthewsboro after its founder, George Matthews. The town experienced heavy flooding during the 1938-1939 season and lost its status as an agricultural center due to this reason. In 1955, Matthews moved from Henderson County to Alamance County and was renamed Alamanceboro.
