The first post office in the community was established in 1811. By 1830, Matthews had a population of 500 people and a schoolhouse. A Presbyterian church was built in 1831 and became a cathedral also known as Saint John's Episcopal Church after being consecrated by Bishop James Mottridge. In 1865, Vance County merged with Granville County to form Davidson County. In 1970, Davidson County merged with Swain County to form Moore Counties. In 2006, Moore counties were renamed Pickens County because of the opening of the I-75 corridor southwest of Athens which led to increased development near the county line
