Matthews also has a significant local history with slaves being brought here for labor during the early years of this country's slave trade. By 1860, more than 60% of all jobs in the entire rural area were held by slaves – many serving as field hands or sharecroppers on white families' plantations. When Union troops burned down plantations in eastern Tennessee during their 1863 raid into Kentucky, they took particular aim at Blue Ridge Tobacco Company – destroying more than 100 acres (40 hectares) of land and damaging some 400 buildings including mills and homes that had been built by slave laborers over decades ago! Today, much like many other towns in America experiencing rapid growth since 2000 due to new technology or strong economic opportunities such as tourism or farming industries, Matthews suffers from high levels of poverty and crime rates which have resulted in several revolts against government policies throughout its history- most notably during World War II when African Americans worked alongside whites on victory gardens near what is now downtown Matthews). However, through hard work and community engagement initiatives such as regular Saturday night markets (staple food items such as vegetables and fruits) along with outreach programs like Head Start/ kindergartens for street kids living below poverty lines (the rate among children living below Poverty Level increased from 27% in 2000 to 48% currently), Matthews has made progress reversing some trends while still struggling economically alongside other places around US that have seen similar transformation over recent years despite similar challenges faced by residents statewide (e.g., Memphis).
