Witherspoon's work for First Presbyterian Church is one of the earliest examples of American eggshell architecture It features a Richardsonian Romanesque Revival design with three levels set back from a stepped parapet that runs along each side elevation; this style became popular during the height of Gothic Revival architecture during the 20th century when builders turned to Religious Education Centers (REECs) as models for their new designs. First Presbyterian Churches are also home to one of North Carolina's only original cast iron fireplaces dating back to 1830 which has been displayed at various events throughout its history including being featured on an episode of "Antiques Roadshow". Second Presbyterian Church was completed in 1909 and replaced Fourth Baptist Church which had been damaged by fire in 1890. Fourth BaptistChurch building had been destroyed by fire again less than 5 years prior to its replacement Second Presbyterians built one additional floor addition onto their original building that housed classes, office space, a chapel, music room and storage facilities before ceasing operations effective July 1st 1978 . One significant addition made to Second Presbyterians’ new building was their use of rusticated stone quoins instead of standard concrete piers as part of their vaults which provide an unique appearance today . Today’s congregation functions as both worshiping house for services on Saturday evenings as well as having classrooms, meeting spaces, research labs and more purposes for using their facility on Wednesday nights during Lent). Second Presbyterians remained active until they ceased operations effective July 1st 1978 due largely to changes within Christianity over denominational affiliation due primarily to Pentecostalism gaining influence within denominations following World War II

By 1830, the town had a population of over 100 people and a school. In 1838, Matthews became the county seat of Davidson County.
