Matthews, North Carolina is a small town located in eastern Onslow County, North Carolina. The population was 539 as of the 2010 census. Farming has always been a big part of Matthews life. The first settlers in Matthews were white men from Scotland who arrived in 1828. They started a store and raised crops until 1830 when they moved out to find land. The next group of Scots came overland and started farming east of downtown Matthews in 1832. By 1840, there were six families living in Matthews with seventy-three acres (300 ha) Cultivated land alone! Some more English immigrants followed suit and by 1850, there were nineteen families living here with 182 acres (700 ha). In 1862, James Witherspoon Pritchard founded Pritchard & Sons Store which remains open to this day! Some other important events that took place during this time include: In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Fort Donelson near Matthews while retreating from Chattanooga after his defeat at Second Battle of Chattanooga; almost everyone living within five miles (8 km) of the fort died as a result including over fifty percent of all males under twenty-five years old! This event forever changedMatthews because it resulted in an influx of new people who decided to stay put rather than leave for fear another such disaster might happen again

Matthews was founded in 1792 by General James Matthews, a officer of the British army. In 1851, it became the county seat of Rutherford County. The town was platted in 1856, and named after General James Matthews. The first courthouse was built in 1861 and moved to its present location in 1905. The town is home to the North Carolina State Capitol and many other government buildings. The Great Fire of Raleigh burned throughout much of Raleigh on August 24, 1913, killing more than 300 people and causing extensive damage to the city center and surrounding neighborhoods. After a two-year investigation that exposed shortcomings in firefighting techniques, Mayor Harry Haywood ordered an expensive new fire station and equipment be constructed at what is now First Baptist Churchyard Park. This led to increased attention paid to fires by citizens and politicians alike, which helped make Raleigh a major economic center during the Progressive Era. In 1933, Chapel Hill became the state capital for North Carolina when Governor Roy Cooper moved from Raleigh to make room for his new office within the capitol complex on Hillsborough Street near Peacock Alley. Chapel Hill has since served as both the state capital and as the largest city in North Carolina since then with over 200,000 residents living within its boundaries.
Matthews was founded in 1792 by Capt. James Matthews as a small settlement on the Yadkin River. In 1809, the town became part of Greensboro, North Carolina. The town was re-established in 1887 and named Matthews after James Matthews, its first mayor.
