Matthews, North Carolina is a small town located in the Granville County seat of Malone. The population was 1,497 at the 2010 census. It is named after General James Matthews who fought in the American Revolution. Matthews was founded as a log cabin by Revolutionary War veterans John and Sarah Matthews. The first store opened in 1825 and the first post office was established in 1828. In 1860, the community had 637 residents and it became a separate district of Granville County. By 1880, there were 938 residents and Matthews became an incorporated town. Theodus Hicks built Haughton Hall in 1903 which served as both a public library and county courthouse until it burned down in 1966. Since 2000, Matthews has been considered an "unofficial" city by the Durham-Mecklenburg Gateway Partnership because its mayor provides services not offered by Durham or Mecklenburg County governments. According to unofficial statistics from 2009-2013, Matthews employed 154 people within its borders; this number increased to 186 employees by 2016 when it joined forces with neighboring towns of Dunnett and Tarboro to form the Tri-Cities Area Development Corporation (TCADC). The main economic activity of Matthews is tourism which contributes $1 million per year to local coffers according to figures provided by Mayor Jim Beasley Jr.. Other major industry sectors include manufacturing ($10 million) education ($3 million) and health care ($2 million). Local businesses provide nearly all of the jobs within town limits with only 2% being related to service industries such as law enforcement or transportation/transportation companies. In recent years many new businesses have come online due to growing demand for college students and other professionals commuting into downtown Matthews for classes or work opportunities outside of their homes during lunchtime or after school hours. Matthews was first settled by English settlers in 1672. After several years of negotiation, the colonists agreed to sell land to the British Crown for £5 per acre. The British traders who crossed the ocean to purchase this land were not interested in developing it as a settlement and instead chose to construct Fort Nashborough on Hatteras Island as an observation post for ships anchored at nearby Roanoke Sound. In 1881, Reverend James Aiken organized a group of farmers near Charlotte along with six other small towns around North Carolina to form what would become Matthews. At that time there were only about 2 dozen farms scattered throughout much of eastern North Carolina due to lack of access to water or land opportunities. This lack of farmland led some farmers to establish themselves in larger towns such as Raleigh or Chapel Hill where they could sell their crops and support themselves throughManufacturing jobs or services like laundry work or driving wagons across town (Lahti). Others decidedto settle closer to waterways so they could trade goods with surrounding stateside communities (Ferguson). Ultimately these choices determined which communities would grow into major cities over time- Charlotte grew rapidly while Raleigh stagnated before slowly declining during World War II; both cities regained much Of Their former glory during The Post-War period (Moses). It was not until 1925 that Matthews became a city according To Mayor Waddell’s initiative following recommendations from his predecessor Jeptha Lyon .The decision came about because North Carolina STATE government refused TO fund any new municipal construction within City Limits without prior approval from County Commissioners! Consequently business owners began lobbying state legislators for legislation authorizing Matthews annexation into Durham County
Matthews was founded in 1792 by Captain John Matthews. The town grew rapidly, and in 1866 it became the county seat of Rutherford County. The city was named for Captain Matthews, and the county seat moved to Charlotte in 1868.
