The community was founded by John Cockerill and his brother-in-law Sam Bass in 1814 on land purchased from Colonel Nathaniel Randolph. In 1831, Matthews became an incorporated town and annexed neighboring towns of Clayton and Gastonia. Matthews had its first schoolhouse in 1814 and began teaching white children in 1840 while black schools were not established until 1861. In 1865, during World War II, Matthews served as a base camp for U.S troops fighting on Okinawa Island
