In 1854, David Coker established what would become Gaston County courthouse on present day Main Street in Matthews proper. The community was founded in 1837 by George Matthews as a home for his family and friends after he left his farmstead on Cumberland River to start anew in what is now Matthews. In 1850, George's son Jameson Matthews donated land to form the town square which still stands today. In 1871, Matthews incorporated as an unincorporated community with a population of just over thirty people. By 1907, however, it had grown to over two hundred people and by 1925 it had reached four thousand people. In 1960, when Interstate 95 was laid out through Granville County and parts of Wake County, Matthews became one of the first communities along its route. On July 16th 1914 (just shy of 100 years ago), General Robert E Lee surrendered within three days at Appomattox Court House in Lexington Virginia following the Battles of Bull Run and Fredericksburg resulting in Ulysses S Grant becoming President! Matthewstown residents were quick to celebrate their general’s surrender with street lights being turned on throughout their townsite from dusk until dawn!
