Lumberton, North Carolina is a small town in the eastern part of the state of North Carolina. It is located on I-40, about 30 miles east of Raleigh and 100 miles northwest of Charlotte. The town became an important center for logging in the 1920s and 1930s, with mills closed during World War II due to the bombing of American military installations in the area. From the late 1960s until 1990, Lumberton saw rapid growth as a bedroom community for Raleigh and its suburbs. However, since then it has been struggling to keep up with population growth and cultural changes within Raleigh itself. today's Lumberton still relies heavily on logging as its primary economic activity however some other businesses also operate such as a library and a few restaurants/bars

In 1868, Lumberton became a city and experienced another period of rapid growth which saw it reach 350 people by 1870. However, this prosperity came at a price; during this time Lumberton struggled with financial problems that led to several bankruptcies and even two fires that destroyed many homes. In 1902, lumber tariffs were raised significantly which caused further economic decline for Lumberton. By 1909, however, the city had stabilized somewhat and begun growing again thanks to new investments including commercial development and an expanded library system. Today, Lumberton is one of North Carolina's most economically active cities with a rich history that has been celebrated through events such as its annual Oktoberfest celebration and Homecoming parade
Lumberton was founded in 1785 by Hugh McGraw. The town was named for General James D. Lumber, who helped defeat the British at Saratoga in 1804. In 1865, Lumberton became a city and was renamed Timber City.
