Lumberton is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,496 at the 2010 census. Lumberton is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Lumberton were Presbyterian missionaries who established the first post office there on December 20, 1824. In 1840, a sawmill and grist mill were built and by 1845 it had grown to include four mills making lumber. By 1870, Lumberton had reached its peak as an area manufacturing center with thirteen businesses employing over one thousand workers; however during the late 1800s and early 1900s growth slowed due to heavy competition from other areas in North Carolina for jobs in the increasingly industrialized southern United States. In 1906, disaster struck when a severe storm destroyed much of downtown Lumberton including most of the sawmills and mills; this left many residents homeless and without their livelihoods. Although some rebuilt or re-opened within months they were never able to fully recover from the damage done by the storm which remains an emotional scars for many today. The population has slowly declined throughout most of its history but has experienced significant increases during certain periods such as during World War II when demand for wood grew dramatically thanks tothe war effort; again following war times there was significant growth in housing opportunities especially around Interstate 85 which led to more people moving into town so that they could access all that new development potential (and because prices for land near I-85 increased rapidly). However since 2000 population growth has been very limited with only 1 percent increase over 1999 levels according as of 2017 . On January 9th 2019 It was announced that Lumberton will have its own municipal government starting February 1st 2019! This forms a new precedent for towns across America where municipalities have been allowed to exist outside of state governments for various reasons such as cost savings or curbing red tape – something that Robeson County needs desperately if we are going to keep up with other communities like Nashville…..
Lumberton was founded in 1799 by General James Robertson. It became a post office in 1802 and a town in 1825. Lumberton was the site of a large battle between Confederate forces and Union troops on April 12, 1865, which resulted in the Battle of Lumberton Heights.
