Lumberton is a town in western North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,508 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what would become Lumberton was John Hughes who arrived in 1784. He built a cabin on what is now Old Highway 2 near present day Lumberton High School. A post office called Hughesville was established in 1802, and remained in operation until 1860. In 1812, James Kellar settled here with his family and began to grow corn and wheat which he sold to local farmers for goodsportation out of town on horseback or carriages. In 1824, General Alfred Ewing purchased land from Hughes and named it Ewingtown after himself. In 1865, plans were made to build a railroad through this area but no action took place until 1870 when Confederate troops burned down the original roadbed to prevent its construction by Union forces under General Johnston during the Battle of Gettysburg as retribution for his surrender that year. At that time most people within Lumberton lived off their land so there wasn't much development until after World War II when several large industrial plants were built around Lake Norman including: Coca Cola Bottling Plant (1948), American Motors (1949), PEP Corporation Paper Products Plant (1950), Southeastern Bell Telephone Company Headquarters (1955) and Gulfstream Aerospace Industries headquarters (1983). Today many small businesses operate in downtown Lumberton including restaurants such as Crabtree's BBQ & Grille, Jimmy Johns Pizza Place & wings, Dave's Doughnuts & Donuts, Big Daddy's Baked Beans & Pizza Place etc., along with numerous service providers such as banks; law enforcement; vehicle mechanics; real estate agents; grocery stores/markets/supermarkets etc.; while also providing various recreational opportunities like golf courses/races; swimming pools; tennis courts etc.. Coal mining continued operations into the 21st century with companies like Peabody Energy NL active until 2008 when all operations ceased due to environmental concerns over coal dust created by open burning methods used during transportation of coal seams near Interstate 85 north of town.. Today many businesses operate within downtown Lumberton including restaurants such as Crabtree's BBQ & Grille, Jimmy Johns Pizza Place & wings, Dave's Doughnuts & Donuts, Big Daddy's Baked Beans & Pizza Place etc., along with numerous service providers such as banks; law enforcement; vehicle mechanics; real estate agents; grocery stores/markets/supermarkets etc.; while also providing various recreation opportunities like golf courses/races; swimming pools; tennis courts etc..
Lumberton was founded in 1827 by John L. Timberlake and is located in Brunswick County, North Carolina. The town changed its name to Lumberton in 1868 after a fire destroyed the original town site.
