In 1916, Lumberton became one of ninety-six cities in North Carolina to become a part of the United States Federal government through The National City Bank Act. During World War II, Lumberton played an important role in helping make America's military effort successful. The city was also damaged by fire in 1945, but quickly recovered. In recent years, Lumberton has developed into a major cultural center with many popular attractions including an art museum, multiple theaters (including two professional arenas), and a variety of restaurants and bars.

The lumber industry dating back to early days remains an important economicstay for Lumberton with sawmills still operating today throughout much of downtown including riverfront property along Lake Cumberland that offers excellent views of both Timberlane Estates development directly across Cumberland River towards Wilmington/Social Security Park across town (not to mention some beautiful old plantations on riverfront). Today there are also a few smaller mills providing employment for about 50 locals plus many people working at larger mills that supply products all over eastern North Carolina; these include furniture manufacturing (Haley Furniture & Craftsmanship), banking (Wachovia Bank), textiles (Plymouth Manufacturing Company) among others
