Lumberton is located on US 19 and NC 287B, about 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of Wilmington and 8 miles (13 km) east of Carteret Island. The first European to visit Lumberton was Captain John Smith in 1608 when he landed on northernmost Cape May County with his small party of men looking for a passage to India. He named the place "New Ireland" after himself because he could not find any land that bore his name elsewhere in America. In 1734, James Logan settled here as one of several hundred planters who founded Charlotte County in present-day North Carolina. By 1851, Lumberton had grown sufficiently to support its own post office and two schools; it also boasted a Masonic Lodge No 1 and a Baptist Church built in 1853 by Reverend Ainsworth Thomson, later Bishop of Raleigh. In 1898, lumber companies began construction on an express railroad from Raleigh to Wilmington via Laurinburg and Lumberton; this became known as the "Lumber Line". The company operated until 1907 when it went bankrupt due to shortages caused by World War I; however, during that time many local businesses were created such as C&O Ice Cream Company which continued operation until 1987 when it merged with ConAgra Foods Inc.; both companies still operate today as part of PepsiCo PLC (). During World War II over 2 million Americans worked at General Motors plants in Durham and nearby Wilmington; these establishments produced munitions including airplane parts and tanks In 1951 Lumberton's only school closed but new buildings were soon erected which included a gymnasium/ Recreational Facility (), community center (), library (), firehouse () and hospital (). The first post office opened here on November 3rd1851 under the name New Ireland Post Office (); it remained open until 1954 when it changed its name to Timberville Post Office (). As more people moved into town they needed more housing so new neighborhoods were developed such as SpringHill Terrace () and Intervale (); these neighborhoods remain today while other areas have been preserved like Highfields Village (). In 1957 saw another school built - Hargrave School () which remains open today serving grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade along with online access In 1984 saw yet another school added - Gannon Elementary School () which serves kindergarten through twelfth grade along with online access Today Timberville is home to some 5 churches including Methodist church (), Presbyterian church (), Baptist church (), Catholic church () & United Methodist church ().
