Lumberton is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,696 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Lumberton was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1792. The name comes from the local tree species, linden. Lumberton is located in the eastern part of Gaston County and lies on Route 219 east of Charlotte. The town is bordered by Mecklenburg County to the north, Randolph County to the east, and Alexander county to the south. According to the 2000 census, Lumberton had a total population of 4,898; 4,711 of which were according to race and 2,914 were female residents only. As of 2010 there are 3 elementary schools (PreK-4), 1 high school (5-12), 1 middle school (grades 7-8) and one postsecondary institution/university (336 acres (140 hectares)) within Lumberton limits: Lumsden Academy for PreKindergarten through 8th grade; Maplewood Christian School for grades 9-12; Timberline Preparatory School for grades K-2; Riverbend Baptist Church for grades 3-6; First Presbyterian Church for services starting at 7am every morning until 10pm nightly including services on Saturdays and Sundays afternoons; The original Scots Irish community was first established around 1792 when James Watt arrived from Scotland with his family as part of a group seeking religious freedom in America. Watt formed what would become known as "The Second Scots Irish Settlement" in what is now Lumberton Township where he built a log cabin known as "Old Mill". This settlement continued until 1834 when most of present day Gaston County was organized into counties including Gastonia which included much more land than what is now Lumberton Township or any other township within that county excepting Hillsborough Township on the Outer Banks whereupon many ScotchIrish immigrants followed their brethren ashore and began anew their lumber business operations along with others coming from other parts of America such as Pennsylvania who had settled there during Revolutionary War era before moving back home across Atlantic ocean to start anew lives among their kinfolk who had homes hereabouts since before English colonization took place hereabouts about 1595 AD under King James VI & I having previously been headquartered at Jamestown upriver from this place also prior thereto namely at Cape Elizabeth Castle on modern day Yorktown Peninsula close by wherein stood an extensive redoubt / citadel against French forces during colonial times while also serving as an important military base engaged in various wars both American & British over time culminating with independence & Utopia proclamation being issued thenceforth thereby becoming self contained city status & became known thereafter as Charlotte upon its incorporation into NC sometime later). 1) In 1792 when James Watt arrived in America he found many people still living near EdinburghScotland who'd left their homes during Cromwell's England rule which ended with Patriots taking power there 2) When they got here they saw lots of trees so they named it "Lumperton" after one 3) They started building cabins but soon realized this wasn't going to work so they turned tologging instead 4) Because logs take time to grow big enough they started using teams instead 5) By 1834 all these people were gone so someone named John Loudoun came overland and saw that if he could get some land then maybe these woods could be used too so he bought some from James Watt 6) John Loudoun set up shop out west near present day Fort Hill Road/Route 219 which led down into those woods today 7) He started farming but it didn't do well because no one wanted to buy his food so he stopped farming around 1840 or 1850 8) Around 1860 somebody decided that this might be a good spot because there was plenty of timber hereabouts 9) So somebody else came overland another named Wm Fenton bought some more land 10) Fenton built himself a house 11] And things kinda worked out okay because lotsa people moved HERE 13] But then around 1870 something happened that nobody knows exactly what it was 14] A lota fiery rumors circulated about what might have happenened 15] But we just don't know 16] So whatever happened nobody knows For sure

In 1965, Lumberton celebrated its centennial with celebrations that included a parade and exhibition of art and artifacts from around the world. Today, Lumberton is one of the most vibrant cities in eastern North Carolina with a rich history dating back more than two hundred years!
Lumberton was founded by James Robertson in 1768. It became a town in 1827 and it was one of the original thirteen towns in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The town had a population of about 2,500 people when it merged with Rocky Mount in 1907.
