The Town of Lumberton was incorporated on May 4, 1853. Lumberton is located on the Yadkin River between Johnston and Raleigh counties. It has a total area of 64 square miles (151 km2). The town was founded by Captain John Harnett in 1813 after he purchased land from the Cherokee Nation for $1,000. In 1827 Captain Harnett donated to the town a sawmill that continued operation until 1953. The first post office in Lumberton was established on December 12, 1833; it served as an outpost for Johnston County before being moved to Raleigh in 1836. On July 14, 1861 Colonel Nathaniel Pope surrendered what became known as "Pope's Landing" during the American Civil War to Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell at Lumberton Mills complex south of downtown Lumberton while they were attacking Johnston County arsenal east of town. Lumbernton had one school district which operated from 1865-1957 and then merging into Wake County public Schools when Wake County formed its own system in 1957 however some students continue to attend private schools until this day According to the 2000 census there were 10,711 people living in Lumberton Township including 9342 households and 97369 families residing within a statistical area called East Durham which included portions of Cary and Chapel Hill counties north of Interstate 95 (/ Tobacco Road), including parts of Apex and Garner Counties westward through Elizabeth City farms into eastern Moore county The racial makeup of lumperTON according to US Census 2000 was 98% White (non-Hispanic), 1% Black or African American (0%), 0% Native American or Alaska Native (0%), 2% Asian/Pacific Islander (1%), 1% from other races (1%). Lumberton is located several miles north of Raleigh, near the intersection of U.S. 301 and NC 158. The town was originally built on a bluff overlooking the river and had ample land to support its growing population.
