Lincolnton has a history dating back to 1825 and it is one of the oldest towns in North Carolina. The town was named for Colonel John Coleridge Lincolnton, who fought in the American Revolution and during the Mexican-American War. The first settlers in what is now Lincolnton were farmers who arrived from Georgia in 1824. They began farming land that had been donated by General James Moorehead. In 1830, Reverend George Henniker moved to Lincolnton from Cookeville and began preaching there. He soon became known as an important preacher in this community and helped start churches throughout Buncombe County. In 1835, Major John Trimble founded a school on the east side of Lincolnton Creek which would become known as Trimble Academy today. This school was instrumental in helping to promote education within these early days of LINCOLTONTOWN development! In 1840, Drury & Wills erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street near where Ballantyne University stands today (and still stands!). This cabin served as the first permanent home for residents of LINCOLTONTOWN – it was also used as a courthouse until 1906 when it burned down due to arson! In 1845, Reverend Elisha Aiken organized a Presbyterian church here which would grow into First Presbyterian Church Today! LINCOLTONTOWN continued to develop rapidly after its incorporation as a town! By 1870, business had begun growing with industries such as manufacturing and agriculture becoming more common; however, World War I put an end to all this growth! However, since then…the town has experienced some significant growth including becoming home to several hospitals/clinics over time; being named one of "America's fastest-growing communities" by Forbes magazine; being selected by UPI as one of "10 Communities You'll Love To Live In" - again proving that even during tough times there are always opportunities for growth!

Lincolnton was founded in 1792 as a small farmstead on the edge of what is now Lincolnton Township. In 1867, it became the seat of government for Rutherford County, which had been created from portions of Davidson and Gaston counties. The county courthouse and other important landmarks were moved to Lincolnton from Rutherford County in 1969. The town's history begins with early settler Edmund Peebles (1762-1834) who built a log cabin on what is now Peebles Road in 1792. He named his farm "Lincolnton" after his hometown of Lancaster, England. A few years later, Peebles' son, John Peebles (1793-1864), started farming there too and added two more log homes to his holdings by 1810. By 1830, Lincolnton had become a large town with over 100 residents and five stores. In 1867, Rutherford County was formed from parts of Davidson and Gaston counties and Lincolnton became its capital; however, it never regained its previous size until after World War II when it grew rapidly due to increases in agricultural production within the area and suburban development around it.
