Lincolnton, North Carolina is a town in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's first settler was James Covington in 1798. Lincolnton grew rapidly during the early 1800s as new roads were being built and farmers began to settle in the area. At its peak in 1820, Lincolnton had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1830, however, the town had shrunk to just 350 people because of increasing competition from nearby Durham and Chapel Hill. In 1848, state Representative John Pemberton became interested in developing Lincolnton and started purchasing land around it. In 1854 he purchased 5 acres (2 km²) on what is now Main Street for $250 cash and renamed it "Pemberton Park". When Pemberton died in 1865 his wife took control of the land and developed it into what is today Lincolnton Park. On December 12th 1861 Confederate forces under General Beauregard unsuccessfully attacked Union troops at Fort Fisher on Outer Banks of North Carolina while attempting to cross over to South Carolina via the Elizabeth River Bridge undetected by Union troops stationed nearby. This event led to increased tensions between Unionists and Confederates throughout much of 1862 as word spread about this unsuccessful attack; an ongoing problem that would continue until 1865 when all Confederate forces surrendered unconditionally following Ulysses S Grant's successful Siege Of Petersburg. During Reconstruction after the Civil War many African Americans moved into areas such as Lincolnton which had former slaveowners willing to provide them with affordable housing and work opportunities; this process known as "Black Reconstruction." Many white residents also fled or left during this time period due to economic reasons such as taxes becoming high or difficultTo afford property elsewhere within Craven County while living near black residents who could provide them with jobs or education opportunities (this process known as Whiteflight). In 1871 Jno Hines established a grocery store on Market Street which would become one of Lincolnton's most popular businesses for more than 50 years; eventually becoming part of Duke University's History Department where it remains today open for business . In 1925 Wm Eller founded Western Electric Company which would later become Tyco International Holdings Incorporated (); initially based out of Plantation Road but eventually moving their headquarters downtown where they remain today . From 1927 until 1963 there was also First Baptist Church located on Tryon Avenue which served both local residents and visitors alike . The first Machine Gun Corps was organized in Lincolnton on December 12th 1912 and was later renamed the 5th North Carolina Infantry Regiment (MGC). On September 11th 1913, General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia and on October 9th 1914 the armistice came into effect. The war ended with the surrender of General Lee.

Lincolnton is a town in Gates County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gates County. The town was founded in 1838 and named for General James Lincolnton, an officer of the Union army during the American Civil War. Lincolnton is located on the eastern edge of Gates County and bordered by Johnston County to the north, Wilkes County to the east and Douglas County to the south. As of the 2010 census, Lincolnton had a total area of , all land. The community began as a small settlement on courthouse square just north of present-day downtown Lincolnton. In 1838, General James Lincolnton donated land to make up what would become Lincolnton Village; this donation allowed for growth within what would become Lincolnton Township. By 1840, there were five buildings in progress on College Street: four residences for male settlers and one for Female Settlers (now known as "The Women's House"), which served as their government center until it burned down in 1861; two stores; a blacksmith shop; and a schoolhouse (later renamed Poindexter Academy). In 1847-48Stephen Atherton builta store on Chatham Road northeast of present day downtown Lincolton after moving from Lexington when that community became an part of Raleigh following its incorporation into Wake Forest University in 1846. In 1851-52 Thomas Capps built another store just northwest of current day downtown LINCOLTON upon his purchase from Atherton with proceeds from his successful business dealings with Native Americans living along Chatham Road Northeast where he later acquired title to over . This second store continued operations until destroyed by fire about 1955/56 when it was replaced by Pee Dee Funeral Home which still stands today across streets NE & SW from original Atherton Store site
Lincolnton was founded by General James McClellan in 1775 as a small settlement on the Hiwassee River. The town grew around the Presbyterian and Methodist churches, which were built in the early 1800s. In 1878, Lincolnton became a city and soon developed into one of the most important economic centers in North Carolina. It hosted many of the state's important events, including the inaugural session of the North Carolina Legislature and Governors' Conference.
