Lincolnton is a town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,623 at the 2010 census. Lincolnton is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area and is the county seat of Wake County. It lies on the Catawba River southeast of Raleigh and southwest of Durham. The first white person to live in what would become Lincolnton was John Smith in 1763. He built a cabin on present day Old Mill Road just south of present day courthouse Square. In 1836, David Wilkes established a small plantation about one mile (1 km) northwest of Lincolnton on the Catawba River; this became known as Wilkes Plantation until it was sold to Randolph Wright Sr., an American businessman, in 1909. Lincolnton began as a small agricultural village on Robeson County land east of modern-day Durham. The village grew rapidly after independence from British rule in 1776 and by 1800 had over 1,000 people living there with their own school, store, and church. In 1819, General James Johnston ordered all towns within 10 miles (16 km) of Raleigh be incorporated into Johnston's new state government; Lincolnton followed suit two years later. In 1830, several men settler families began building log cabins on Old Mill Road nearpresent day Courthouse Square; these were called "Johnnies". A post office was established at Lincolnton in 1834; it remained open until 1907 when it was discontinued due to high postage rates caused by mail being brought all the way from Raleigh via road rather than boat or airmail service then available. In 1871–72 George Stephenson conducted a largedemonstration Ride Across America using locomotives pulled by horses; during his demonstration tour he stopped at Lincolton for lunch before continuing westward July 12th-15th。 At this time only five other towns had been designated as destinations for passengers: Rocky Mount (North Carolina), Lynchburg ( Virginia), Paducah Kentucky ( also visited July 12th-15th ), New York City ( July 16th - 20th ) and points north including Cumberland Valley ( Maryland). After Stephenson's demonstration many companies offered trips across America using their locomotives which led to railroad Mania……..During its heyday steamboats made up almost half the traffic along the Catawba River because they could travel great distances without stopping at some important portage or bridge…..Today few if any steamboats cross that river……..

Lincolnton (pronounced "LIN-kuhl-ton") is a town in central North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,475 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg County, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lincolnton's economy is based on agriculture and trade. Lincolnton was founded by white farmers in 1836 as an agricultural community named for General John Cheadle Lincolnton, then a U.S. Army officer stationed in South Carolina. The name derived from a local Cherokee word meaning "place where men grow corn". In 1857, the town received its charter from Confederate General Jubal Early and became known as Lincolnton because of its location on the Nashoba River upstream from Charlotte. The first black resident of Lincolnton was Loretta Bowen who arrived in 1906 after moving to Charlotte from Cuba with her parents and sister. She started working at an early age helping out her white family while also studying at Wofford College and becoming interested in politics and public service alongside her white classmates there. After serving as mayor of Lincolnton for three terms starting in 1954, Bowen entered politics full time and served until she retired office in 1984; she died 10 years later at the age of 92 . In 1984, when four African Americans were charged with making false statements during a hearing about housing discrimination against African Americans living near Interstate 95 in nearby Matthews, North Carolina twelve miles to the south-west of Lincolnton - one decision that would forever change the course of race relations within this area - Mayor Bowen led protests outside the courthouse before leading a march to I-95 which ended with speeches by civil rights leaders including Dr Martin Luther King Jr.. In 1990 Solange Knowles moved into what had been described as one of several dilapidated houses located next door to an all black high school; two years later she built an original home on top of an old barn using funds raised through yard sales and bake sales among other means .. Known now as Knowles House Museum & Artspace (KHMA), it has since become one of largest museums located inside a small town north eastof Charlotte
Lincolnton is a town located in Carteret County, North Carolina. The population was 8,885 at the 2010 census. Lincolnton was chartered on February 10, 1851, and named for Colonel John C. Lincolnton of the 1st Regiment N.C.A., who had come to the area in 1836 to purchase land from the Cherokee Nation. The first store in Lincolnton opened its doors on April 12, 1851, and was operated by Wm. Fenton and Bros.. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s due to its strategic location halfway between Raleigh and Charlotte on both sides of the Catawba River. In 1860, General Nathan Bedford Forrest visited Lincolnton while on his march through Carteret County looking for new land to sell to settlers. Forrest suggested that Lincolnton be included within his new Department of East Tennessee under the command of General Johnston; this suggestion led to increased growth in Lincolnton throughout 1861 and 1862 as people came looking for a place near where they could make their fortunes militarily. In 1865, after Confederate forces abandoned Fort Donelson in Tennessee and retreated into southern Alabama, orange groves began to prosper along the Catawba River because of high demand from Confederate troops for food supplies. This resulted in an increase in only one store per capita in Lincolnton during 1865 compared with 1850 when there were five stores per capita. However, despite this increase there were few businesses open past 1830 due to lack of interest or infrastructure at that time either due to low population density or rugged terrain which made it difficult to set up a business venture outside of agriculture or ranching alone; these factors limited development opportunities for early nineteenth century towns like Lincolnton throughout much of North Carolina During Reconstruction following World War II most residents left post-war America for various reasons such as political instability caused by segregationist policies enacted by Southern states; however some residents did stay until after Hurricane Floyd destroyed much of rural North Carolina during 1999-2000 leaving little opportunity for economic redevelopment As African Americans started moving back into formerly white areas following emancipation during the late 1800s most businesses closed down due primarily because black customers could not afford prices higher than those associated with white customers; this trend continued into modern times with many African American businesses having closed down by 2000 although some have been reborn as independent small businesses
