Lincolnton is a small town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,500 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Lincolnton River and on the border of Johnston and Nash counties. The first gun magazine in Lincolnton was established in 1851 by John Broughton. The first magazine west of the Appalachian Mountains opened its doors in 1872 in Bentonville, Arkansas. Gun magazines were started all over the United States as a way to keep guns available for people who needed them but did not own a gun themselves. In 1911, Lincolnton became home to the world's first rifle shooting competition held at local high school using only modern rifles (not shotguns). In 1977, Lincolnton's mayor formed the "LINCOLNTON GUN MAGAZINE CONTINUING EDUCATION FOUNDATION" to support gun education initiatives throughout town and neighboring counties. Today, The Foundation continues to provide scholarships for local students interested in pursuing an academic degree related to firearms or ammunition management/supply chain engineering or any other related field with an emphasis on firearm safety and Second Amendment rights.

As development grew in nearby Chapel Hill, Lincolnton began to lose its status as a major center of trade and commerce; however, it continued to maintain some degree of local autonomy until 1881 when it became part of Durham County. After the war it reverted back to its pre-war status as a small town with a population of around 500 people. However, over the years Lincolnton has undergone several transformation efforts that have brought it closer to becoming an attractive community cultural node in the region. These include the establishment of several art galleries, professional theaters, and new public libraries; as well as significant investment into parks and lakeside resorts.Today Lincolnton is one of North Carolina's most vibrant communities with strong ties to its history and culture – making it an excellent place to live or visit.
Lincolnton was founded in 1799 by Captain John Lincolnton and his family. The town was named for Colonel James Lincolnton, who had helped survey the area. In 1819, a post office was established in Lincolnton, and the town became a general store and mercantile center. By 1830, Lincolnton had a population of around 100 people. In 1853, the town went through an economicression that caused many businesses to close their doors. However, due to the efforts of Mayor John Waddell and others, the town bounced back and regained its prosperity by 1860. In 1865, Colonel J.T. Hill opened a large grocery store in Lincolnton which helped spur the growth of the cityscape around it. Over time, other stores followed suit until there were over twenty-five small businesses operating within what is now downtown Lincolnton. Throughout its history, Lincoltonon has been home to several industries such as manufacturing (fishingtackle manufacture being one of them), retail trade (including shoe stores/boutiques), accommodation (such as hotels/motels), transportation (a railroad station was built in 1899) and agricultural production (a variety of crops are grown here).
