Lincolnton is a town in Stanly County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Lincolnton is part of the Charlotte–Fort Mill Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in this area was established by Scotsmen in 1799 and was named Fort Loudoun after General James Wolfe's victory over the French at the Battle of Wolfe's Pass. The first post office was established in 1805 and was called Lexington until it changed its name to Lincolnton in 1824. In 1827, Colonel John Alexander Harnett founded an academy here which became known as Harnett University. A small courthouse and jail were built here between 1830 and 1831, when the town became a local seat of government. Lincolnton has had many different names throughout its history including: Colored Gullah (1860-1930), white Dutch (1692-1775), Lincolnton (1799-1825), Indian Reserve No 2 (1821-1826), Preston Township (1800-1809) and Penderstown Township (1800). It is believed that Cherokee Indians named their village "Lencolnton" after General Andrew Jackson's expedition against them during the Indian Removal Act of 1830. In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman ordered his troops to burn down six African churches located in what is now Lincolnton because they were considered heathen temples. This event is commonly referred to as "the burned churches campaign". One constant through all these changes has been the presence of a Presbyterian church which continues to serve as central worship for both locals and visitors today. After years of growth and development, Lincolenton officially became a city on December 12th, 1907 with nearly 4,000 residents! Today LINCOLTONN remains one of America’s most vibrant communities – anchored by its Presbyterian church which continues to be one of its most important institutions – while also being home to some great businesses such as Southeastern Baking Company & Tea Room; McFarlane’s Pharmacy; American Legion Post #191; Stormont Breweries Inc.;Broad Street Pizza; among others!
