The town was named for Colonel John Lincolnton (1685-1749) of the Parliamentary Regiment of North Carolina who had served in the British Army during the American Revolution. Lincolnton became a prosperous town with a population of over 100 people in 1800. In 1851, Lincolnton incorporated as an independent city and began to grow rapidly. In 1865, it amalgamated with nearby Whiteville to form the new City of Lincolnton. The growth of Lincolnton led to increased development around its downtown area including the construction of a number of businesses and residences. One notable development occurred when legendary baseball player Babe Ruth set up shop in what is now called Ruth's Place on Main Street.
