The population of Lincolnton was 5,452 at the 2000 census. The town has always been an agricultural community with a focus on cotton production. The first settlers in Lincolnton were white farmers who arrived in 1836. They began to make their way through what is now known as Lincolnton Township and started to cultivate land. Cotton became an important crop in early Lincolnton because it could be exported for money. By 1860, there were five farms in Lincolton with more than sixty acres of land planted with cotton. In 1881, a post office was established in Lincolnton and remained operational until 1930. The first mail carrier was Rufus Hargrave who moved from Spartanburg to deliver mail from Lincolnton to other towns in Southwest Johnston County. Trees began being planted around this time as well and would continue to play an important role into the future of agriculture in this area. By 1929, there were twenty-four farms operating out of nineteen square miles of land within present day Lincolton Township limits which produced over one million pounds of cotton per year! The cotton industry died out during World War II but came back stronger once again after the war ended and new technology allowed for further expansion into other crops such as corn and soybeans which have continued to dominate agriculture throughout much of North Carolina today!
