Lincolnton is a town located in Onslow County, North Carolina. It was founded by white men in 1796 as a trading post on the Yadkin River. The town was named for Colonel John Lincolnton, an early settler and one of the first people to live in what is now Lincolnton. In 1824, Colonel John’s son-in-law, James Wilkinson, donated land to establish a town site. The first houses were built in 1825 and the first store opened in 1830. By 1840, the population had increased to twelve hundred residents and the town became known as the “Queen City of Onslow County” for its economic importance. In 1859, Lincolnton became part of upstate North Carolina when it was annexed from Sullivan County. The annexation made Lincolnton one of the smallest towns in Upstate Carolina but it did not prevent its growth over time.Today, Lincolnton has a population of over three thousand residents and continues to be an important community within Onslow County. Its history is rich with stories about businesses and families that have shaped its today; including those who founded Sam’s Club and Coca-Cola Company
