By: John B. Knoppers, Jr. In 1868, George Armstrong Custer's company of the Seventh Cavalry was engaged in a pitched battle with the Sioux at Little Bighorn Creek, Montana. As part of theirotiive to ensure victory over the Indians, General Custer ordered his troopers to carry extra rounds of ammunition for their carbines. The practice continued until soon after World War II when it was replaced by reloading techniques. The early days of powder and ballistics were fraught with danger and excitement as firearms evolved from muzzle-loading muskets into modern period guns. On July 10th, 1792, Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Flourish and his detachment of riflemen under Captain James Caldwell attacked an encampment of Shawnees on the banks of the Saline River in present-day Lincolnton County, North Carolina. A total of twelve warriors were killed and twenty-four captured including two chiefs who informed their nation’s enemies about British intentions in central America before being executed along with all other captives that day. In 1794 Captain John Forbes led a party against an attack by Cherokee Indians near what is now Pee Dee Island in Carteret County; only one warrior was killed during the engagement although several hundred gunshots were fired resulting in three scalps and one scalp wound to Forbes’ head which he later recovered from surgery successfully.. Lincolnton was founded by white men on June 12th,,1796 when Major General Nathanael Greene arrived there from Augusta County Georgia with about seventy men under command consisting principally of officers and gentlemen adventurers recruited for this enterprise chiefly from within South Carolina and Georgia . At first no attempt had been made to plant local farmers or manufactures but rather to seek plunder wherever possible as supplies came up river through Cherokee country; however these operations quickly became too costly so General Greene sent back word ordering all settlers “to build themselves chimneys if they could” We find evidence that some buildings did indeed occur but it is not clear whether these were intended for town or farm purposes………about 1800 a storehouse/ Arsenal was built north side Presbyterian church south side main street where now stands 1st Baptist Church

Lincolnton is located along the Elizabethtown-Lenoir City line. The first settler in what is now Lincolnton was John Winthrop who arrived in 1630. He named his new land "Winthrop's Land" in honor of John Winthrop, an Englishman who had landed in America and founded the colony of Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1628. In 1871, Lincolnton became one of thirty townships within Alamance County when it was created from parts of Lenoir and Randolph Counties. The township's name derived from its location on the Great South Road which ran through much of present-day Alamance and Person counties before turning northwest to intersect the Elizabethtown line about nine miles south of downtown Lincolnton. In 1951, Lincolnton annexed parts of neighboringElizabethtown beginning with sections east and west of Main Street which included portions of what are today known as Woolridge Ranch and Big Ridge Farms because they were being developed for cotton plantations by General Electric Company subsidiary GEICO at that time (the annexation did not take place until 1957). At that time Elizabethtown had a population only slightly over 1,000 people while Lincolnton had a population over 3,000 people making it at least twice as large as Elizabethtown proper even though both municipalities were part of Alamance County until 1911 when they were split into two independent counties: Alamance County to the north and Johnston County to the south (the county boundaries changed again on April 15th, 1920). It should also be noted that although both municipalities were once part of Alamance County until 1911 when they were split into two independent counties: Alcancie County to the north and Johnston County to the south (the county boundaries changed again on April 15th 1920), there has never been any formal merger or division between them since then; rather each municipality has continued to operate autonomously under their own governance structures with little or no interaction with one another other than occasional special events such as town meetings or referenda which are generally governed bylaws passed by respective councils rather than ordinances enacted by elected officials alone
