In 1938, new annexations followed: Morehead City (to the east), Iredell County (to the south) and Chapel Hill (to the west). The annexation caused some controversy because most of these towns were small villages that did not have much in common with each other and because many people felt that Lexington had taken advantage of New Bern's size and importance by making more money from its land than New Bern could ever hope to make from its own businesses. In 1980, Lexington voted to become an incorporated city instead of a Village again due to concerns about how incorporation would impact its economy and quality of life. On October 1st of that year,the city opened for business under this new name with a population of 9,000 residents On January 1st 2009 Council passed Resolution 5-2 giving Lexington wide berth for growth as they see fit without complying with ordinance requirements which would've limited their ability to continue growing

In the 1830s, Lexington, North Carolina was a small town located in the Pender County region of southern North Carolina. The town was founded by Dr. John Nash and his family in 1832 as a stop on the road between Wilmington and Raleigh. The Nash family operated a sawmill and gristmill in Lexington until 1848 when they sold it to J. D. Randall. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Lexington was part of Confederate General Robert Ewell's unit which fought at Kings Mountain. After the war, Lexington became an independent city and remained so until 1921 when it merged with Chapel Hill to form Chapel Hill-Lexington City School District #1 (CHLDSD). The history of Lexington begins with its founding in 1832 by Dr. John Nash and his family who resided near present day Durham Cathedral hill where they built their home known as “Nash” House on land donated by Dr. Nash’s father Isaac Walton Jr.. The millinery business began operation here in 1834 with Mrs.(Mrs.) Merrill operating the first spinning wheel within one hundred years! At that time there were only two roads leading into this small town- one from Carrboro via Lenoir County through Hendersonville to Asheboro then down through Pender Co., thence east to Raleigh;and another coming from Carrboro over hills now called “Mason Road” thru Yadkin & Orange Counties to Asheboro; thence northward thro’ Asheboro & Hendersonville to Chatham Townships aforesaid [sic] where we had our Postoffice established February 17th next following year! We also had store room for 5 or 6 families before the express office could be erected! Hereabouts people shopped for groceries at such stores as Jones field market just south of Main Street today still standing ready to take your purchases whether you desired them fresh or froze! One can still visit Jones Field Market today if one has some patience At this time there were only 2 roads leading into this small town- one from Carrboro via Lenoir County through Hendersonville to Asheboro then down through Pender Co., thence east to Raleigh;and another coming from Carrboro over hills now called “Mason Road” thru Yadkin & Orange Counties to Asheboro; thence northward thro’ Asheboro & Hendersonville to Chatham Townships aforesaid [sic] where we had our Postoffice established February 17th next following year! We also had store room for 5 or 6 families before the express office could be erected!
