There is no doubt that the Lexington Shooting Target Holder Association (LOTA) has been a mainstay in the shooting community for over eighty years. LOTA was founded on October 15, 1916 by a group of local farmers and hunters who wanted to provide a safe and fun place for shooters to shoot target holders. Today, LOTA remains one of the most active organizations in Lexington, providing members with opportunities to learn about and use their favorite Shooting Range equipment. One of the earliestShotgun & Pistol ranges in Lexington was built by Mr. J.B. Hardin at his farm on Wilkinson Road in 1916. The Hardin Shotgun Range was located just off US Highway 512 between Hendersonville Road and Baldy Branch Road and hosted both shotgun matches as well as pistol matches until 1933 when it was closed due to increasing competition from other ranges throughout town. In fact, many people believe that the first rifle range in Lexington opened its doors back in 1922 when Mr. George Fenton leased property at 425 W Main St., now known as Ranges Inc., which housed a rifle range, pistol range, four shotguns pits/pistol training areas, two full size waterfowl ponds, an agricultural research lab and more than twenty Trap & Skeet targets! As you can see from this list of early Lexington Rifle Ranges activity, there were quite a few establishments across town that helped make this small city into one of North Carolina’s leading shooting Communities! In addition to hosting local Rifle Ranges as well as Pistol Ranges throughout town during those early years, LOTA also spearheaded some remarkable achievements within our industry! For instance, en route to becoming one of the most popular Shooting Areas aroundtown back then-the JV&S Trap & Skeet Course located on present day Old Hickory Boulevard south of downtown became one of America’s premiere trap & skeet courses during the late 1920’s thanks largely to efforts put forth by LOTA members such as Bob Hite and future President/CEO Tony Beasley! The course remained open until it closed completely in 1978 after more than fifty years of operation! What made this course so successful? Simply put-it offered experienced Trap & Skeet players access to world-class equipment while also offering novice shooters an opportunity to experience some great American Shootouts right here in Lexington! This course is still considered “the benchmark” for all others trying to imitate its success!

By the late 1800s however, shooters had begun using baskets instead of poles and Targets began being used for other purposes such as billiards and pool. Regardless of how it started, Shooting Target Holder Origin eventually became an integral part of many shooters’ arsenals all around the world.

In 1837, Englishman John Marshall founded Lexington, North Carolina. At the time, it was one of the most important settlements in the area. Marshall's store and post office were among the first in the area. He also developed a farming community with his own slaves and free people. The town grew quickly, and by 1852 it had a population of over 350 people. In 1861, Lexington became part of Confederate States of America after the U.S. Civil War began.
