In 1865 Union General Braxton Bragg made his headquarters at what is now downtown Lexington while he fought against north Carolinian forces under Jubal Early in what is known as Battle of Gettysburg. Billy Sunday preached his first sermon here on October 15th 1865. The major shopping center in town today (and one of the few remaining large concentration centers for retail businesses) is located near Roanoke Road and I-95 just outside of town limits on the outskirts of Carytown which developed around it; Carytown originally consisted only of small farmers' markets surrounded by farmhouses dating back to before WWII). According to some estimates as much as 80% percent all local jobs are related to service or support industries such as health care or education; these include things like lawn mowing or dishwashing through out most days!
