The fortifications were dismantled after Reconstruction ended in America following the war. The town's development continued apace during this time with rapid growth in both population and businesses thanks to railroad construction that reached Lexington early in its history; however, World War II interrupted these trends completely when much of America went into darkness due to Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th 1941 In 1945, approximately 50% of all assets within Buncombe County were nationalized when control over economic resources passed from American nonspecialists to Communist bureaucrats under Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal regime After World War II ended there were corresponding changes again with increased business interests moving away from rural areas towards larger cities such as Asheville while more residents chose to remain clustered around downtown Lexington which became known as "the heartland". Although some functions formerly performed by Fort Hill have been transferred back to the post today (e.g., hosting events related thereto), overall physical activity at Fort Hill has diminished since it ceased being used primarily for military purposes nearly 40 years ago
