In 1814, Lexington, North Carolina became the first town in the United States to be chartered as a village. The town was founded by Revolutionary War veterans who were looking for a new home after their unit was disbanded in Virginia. The area that is now Lexington was known as Catawba County until 1796 when it became part of Georgia. When the U.S. acquired Florida from Spain in 1898, it included Catawba County within its boundaries and renamed it Florida Jacksonville. In 1901, Kentucky merged with Florida and Catawba County became Lexington-Fayette County. In 1907, Lexington-Fayette County voted to become an independent state and on November 3, 1907, the State of North Carolina granted independence to Lexington-Fayette County as well as all of South Carolina following the Southerners’ victory in the referendum. The history of Lexington can be traced back to before any European settlers arrived in what is now North Carolina. By 1800, there were several small villages located near present day Raleigh that served as homes for Native Americans and white settlers alike. On April 13th of that year, Cherokee Chief John Ross met with several Englishmen who had taken up residence in what is now Durham COUNTY (northwest corner of NC) during a visit to meet with British officials about lands they wanted in central North Carolina . One group of men traveled northeast along US Highway 12W from Greenville until they reached what is today’s downtown Durham; this group named their new settlement “Durham” after Lord Durham (the Governor General at the time). This meeting led to some additional English settlements being established around Hillsborough River which forms much of Chapel Hill today; these settlements are generally considered to have been called “Cherokee Towne” or just “Towne” by locals because no one knew how else to call them without arousing suspicion among local Native Americans who would have viewed any newcomers with suspicion if they didn't know whence they came! Eventually other Europeans started arriving too: French Canadians coming downriver from Quebec via Cape Fear River; Germans moving upriver from Germantown and Lancaster Counties; Scotsmen settling around Rocky Mount; Welsh miners working on nearby mines (which are still visible today); Irish immigrants coming through Wilmington/New Bern/Beaufort Counties etc.; each bringing their own customs and traditions which blended together over time into what we see today as American culture! By 1810 there were already three small villages located near Raleigh - Salisbury(now Huntersville), Wakefield(nowWinston-Salem), & Lenoir(now Pittman) - all serving various purposes including Indian hunting parties & trade meetings between natives & whites on both sides of the Tar Heel River . It wasn't until 1814 when another group decidedto move permanently into this area - veteran soldiers from Rhode Island who had fought in the Revolution & later migrated eastward through Georgia before landing at Jesup Cove on May 26th – becoming known as The Second Regiment Yankee Volunteers!. After months OF travel across country (& many bloody battles against Indians!), they finally got here on October 11th1814 under Commandof LtCol James Longstreet aka "Jeb" Stuart! As soon as he arrived his troops began erecting Frame houses out Of tree bark so Clustered Together They Looked Like A Fort! Just like everywhere else Back then infrastructure was early developing...A few years later fences Were Built Around These Village Houses To Keep Out predatory animals!! Nowadays You Canstill See Some Frame Houses Left Over From That Time!! 1st Battalion Yankee Volunteers spent winter encampment at Fayetteville Church only 10 miles away
In the early 1800s, Lexington was a small town located in what is now Graham County. The community was founded by pioneers who arrived in 1795 and named it after their hometown of Lexington, Kentucky. In 1836, Lexington became the county seat of Graham County and remained so until 1913. It then served as the capital of North Carolina from 1835 to 1861. After the state's secession from the Union, Lexington became an important center for Confederate forces during the Civil War.
