In Lexington, North Carolina, the beginning of the 20th century was a time of great change. In 2011, the city approved Measure C, which aimed to increase economic development by increasing taxes on businesses and making it easier for them to get permits from county officials. He then moved to Baltimore and began practice as a lawyer. In 1835, he was elected as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Maryland. From 1839-1841, he served as Speaker of the House. In 1840, he was elected Vice President of the United States under Andrew Johnson. On April 4, 1861, Lincoln was appointed to succeed Salmon P. Chase as Secretary of State by Johnson. On May 10, 1861, Lincoln signed an executive order called "The Emancipation Proclamation." This proclamation announced that slavery in all forms must be abolished within five years or else free slaves would be given their freedom. Between September 1861 and March 1865, Lincoln carried out many difficult tasks including leading the Union army during the American Civil War and helping to end Reconstruction in America. After the war ended, Lincoln became one of the most popular presidents in history and died on April 14th, 1865 at Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C..

A cotton gin was built in the town in 1839 and became one of the most important economic engines in the area. In 1863 it became a state capital. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, Lexington declined rapidly, becoming an agricultural village until it regained its prosperity as a manufacturing center during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The Town Square is home to many local businesses including several banks and two churches—one Congregational and one Baptist. The square also contains a library with over 100 volumes dating back to 1806. The first post office opened in 1893 and remains open today as part of the United States Postal Service network. One significant event from Lexington's history is when General Robert Ewell fought against Confederate forces at Gettysburg on July 4th 1863 while wearing what would later be called "Ewell's Earrings." These earrings were recovered years later from his body after his death at Battle Mountain concentration camp outside Petersburg, Virginia
