In 1814, Colonel James Robertson donated land for a public school which became known as "The Henderson School." The first high school opened in 1915 and was called "The Grange." In 1922, "The Lexington News" became the first paper published in Lexington. In 1929, "The Herald-Sun" merged with the "News Observer". In 2009, Lexington Post office moved from its original location at 411 South Main Street to 9031 US Highway 287 West near I-40 exit 191. This move allowed for increased competition among USPS facilities within the Asheville–Buncombe–Carrboro metropolitan area and helped spur development of new postal centers throughout Henderson County. In 2013, Lancaster County took over management of UNC Health Care's Highland Hospital campus located adjacent to The Henderson School property whereupon Englishtown Elementary School relocated there from its current location on Six Mile Road across from Lancaster Catholic High School.
