In 1820, the Cherokee Nation ceded its lands to the United States for $3 million. The following year, a group of white men and boys from Lexington, North Carolina led by Peter Pettigrew traveled to Georgia in search of gold. They discovered that gold was not present in their region but they did find some valuable minerals. In 1830, John Sevier founded the town of Lexington on land that he had acquired from the Cherokee Nation. The town grew quickly and soon became one of the most important settlements in North Carolina. It was also a major center for trade with other states in the south.
