Lexington is a city in Cherokee County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 25,527 at the 2010 census. It lies on the edge of the Piedmont region and along Interstate 85 between Raleigh and Chapel Hill. Lexington is also home to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Duke University. The first two settlers in what would become Lexington were farmers George Addis and his wife Elizabeth Harrell Addis, who arrived from England in 1775. They founded a farm on Catawba River which they named Tryon Valley after their leader Tryon, an officer in the British army during the American Revolution. In 1811, another Englishman, John Moore gave land for a town site on Yadkin River opposite today's downtown area. The town was named for General James Orange County (future Confederate States president) who served as military governor of North Carolina from 1785 until his death in 1802. In 1815, South Carolinian Isaac Brock founded what would become known as Rockingham County when he donated 640 acres (2 km²) of land to be divided into four districts: Centreville-Rawlingsville-Mount Olivette; Mount Olivette-Lenoir; Lenoir-Butler; Butler-Fayetteville-. At that time there were no towns or villages within Cherokee County except those established by Indian traders or soldiers stationed there during military campaigns or patrols. On October 15, 1836 – one year after incorporation – Lexington became known as an "incorporation" with a meeting held at First Presbyterian Church under the guidance of David Ritchie and Benjamin Fenton Sr., both members of the Cherokee Nation Councilsmanial Association which had been formed to promote self government within Cherokees awaiting full blooded independence from Great Britain through negotiations led by Chief Justice John Marshall . On November 5th of that year voters elected Jno Hancey mayor over incumbent David Ritchie withwide support including many prominent citizens such as judge Thomas Ruffin and attorney Ayer Cobb . That same year construction began on what is now First Baptist Church with cornerstone laid by then Mayor Hancey on December 1st followed by service January 4th officiated by Rev Dr Whitehead. Unfortunately due to financial difficulties soon afterward development stalled while much valuable timber was harvested without compensation leaving many families homeless . In 1840–1841 new trustees were appointed w/the express intention “to improve condition” including those responsible for improving roads & bridges etcetera but little progress was made towards fulfilling these intentions despite petitions sent up frequently To The Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest In 1842–1843 Johnston Watts purchased 10 acres adjoining First Baptist Church lot creating Wichita Park west of current downtown boundaries paralleling I 85 just east of US Highways 52nd St & 49th Ave

Lexington, North Carolina is a city located in Durham County, North Carolina. The population was 37,839 at the 2010 census. Lexington is one of two cities in Durham County (the other being Chapel Hill). It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The county seat and largest city of Durham County is Durham. The first permanent settler in what would become Lexington was Captain John Whitehead who arrived in 1735 with his family from Rhode Island. He founded the town on land he had purchased from the Cherokee nation. Captain Whitehead's son James built the first house in Lexington and named it after himself, James Whitehead's Home or "Whiteheads". In 1768,Captain John Whitehead's grandson Samuel married Martha Stewart and moved to Lexington with their children where they situated a gristmill on Court House Creek which became known as First Mill Pond. They also set up a school for their children which still stands today called Mrs Stewart Elementary School. In 1824 Colonel David Dobson established a military post at what became known as Fort Davidson and named it Fort Dobson after himself. In 1827 Drury Hope bought some land east of present-day downtown Lexington from Major General Andrew Pickens for £4200 cash only but no deed ever existed to prove this transaction as Hope never lived to see his purchase accomplished. After Pickens' death, his heirs contested the sale because they could not find any documentation that supports the deal - Consequently, doubt exists whether or not Drury Hope actually owned any property beyond what he claimed when he made his offer to PurchasePickens land back in 1827
