It grew rapidly due to its location and trade with neighboring counties. The population reached 10,000 by 1830. In 1835, the state of North Carolina created a county within Lexington called Davidson County. This addition increased trade and industry in the town, which led to new construction projects such as a jail and courthouse. The Second American Revolution began in 1775 and ended with George Washington’s victory at Yorktown in 1781. During this time period, Kentucky became part of Virginia and North Carolina seceded from that state. In 1819, General James Kenedy organized a militia in Lexington to protect against Indian attacks. Rifle manufacturers soon followed his lead and established their businesses here. By 1840, there were more than 200 firearms dealers in Lexington alone. During Reconstruction following the Civil War, many black Americans moved into central Kentucky from South Carolina and Georgia because of Southern efforts to re-establish control over these states after the war ended. Many black men had been freed slaves during the war or had received compensation for their losses; however, they could not own weapons without white ownership permits or registration requirements set by local authorities. firearm owners needed to keep their guns safe from government agents looking for them if they wanted to sell them or use them for legal purposes such as hunting or target shooting tournaments without getting caught red-handed
Lexington, North Carolina is a town of about 25,000 people located in the Granville County seat of Salisbury. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. The population was estimated at 27,711 as of 2010. The first settlement in what is now Lexington was made on May 10, 1775 by three men – Samuel Chase, James Renfroe and Nicholas Bagley – when they purchased 2 square miles (4 km²) from the Cherokee nation for $5 per acre ($120/km²). The site became known as "New Market" and served as a trading post until 1784. In 1802, General William Troup decided to move his headquarters from Charlotte to Salisbury due to concerns over Indian attacks on white settlers in that area. He ordered Colonel John Smith to build him a home at New Market and named it "Mount Pleasant". When Mount Pleasant was completed in 1812, it became the primary residence of Governor Tryon. In 1827, General Edmund Kirby Smith moved his Headquarters from Raleigh to Salisbury following the Battle of Johnston’s Mill which resulted in an upsurge in raids against frontier settlements by Native Americans. The courthouse which stood on Main Street between State and Carter Streets was erected afterdemolition of the old courthouse at Eastgate Court during Reconstruction. It burned down on December 14th 1897; however its replacement was not built until 1909. The first female justice of North Carolina sat on the bench at this courthouse in 1907 before being re-appointed to serve out her term by Governor Wofford Crane with whom she had worked previously as clerk of court; she remained there until 1913 when she retired with full retirement privileges pursuant to then state law §48-2(c). In 1925 newly formed Cumberland County (the easternmost county within North Carolina) joined North Carolina through an act of the General Assembly; Lexington accordingly lost its status as a municipal corporation within Cumberland County but continued to be included therein insofar as property values were concerned underthenstate law §§8-1 et seq.; nevertheless annexation proceedings commenced immediately upon notification thereof by Cumberland County executive committee effective January 1st 1926 pursuant thereto duly authorized thereby subject only btw village & city limits existing prior thereto - see article note below: See also map p 5 polls conducted Oct 3-6th 2006 among residents aged 20+ who identify themselves both politically and economically speaking revealed that 79% consider themselves “very well off” or better while just 15% say they are “poorly off” or worse
